Fall
2011-2012 Schedule of PSEO at YEAH classes & Course
Descriptions
~ PSEO
at YEAH MISSION STATEMENT ~
PSEO
at YEAH was created to provide academically challenging curricula
taught from a Christian world view in an atmosphere that is nurturing,
supportive and endorsing of the values of home educating students and
their parents.
As
home school parents, we take great care in the planning of our
precious children's educational curriculum as well as the selection of
outside instructors who we know will influence our children not only
academically, but also socially and spiritually.
As
home school parents, we diligently work at the selection of a post
high school college or university that we believe is best suited not
only for our children's educational needs and goals, but one that will
also positively influence their life choices in careers and
friendships for the future.
At
YEAH (Youth Educated At Home), we believe that the same care and
planning should go into the selection of a child's PSEO curriculum and
instructors which will influence not only the developing child's
educational studies, but also will greatly influence their social and
spiritual lives both now and in the future.

COURSE
APPLICATION & TRANSFERABILITY
-
Common Questions
asked by PSEO students and their parents.
-
How will my PSEO
courses apply to an AA or 4-year degree at North Central
University or Northwestern College?
-
How--and will--my
PSEO courses transfer if I decide to attend another college or
university?
-
What are Minnesota
Transfer credits--and how important are they to consider in my
course decisions?
-
Answers to assist
you in this discovery process:
-
Acceptance and
transfer of credits varies per college. If you are
interested in a specific college, be sure to ask admissions
about their policy. (Source: www.getreadyforcollege.org)
-
Minnesota Transfer
credits apply to how credits will transfer specifically to
MNSCU (Minnesota State College Universities). Transfer guides
may be available for private colleges or the University of
Minnesota on the Minnesota Transfer website. (Source: http://www.mnscu.edu/students/admissions/transfer.htm/)
-
PSEO courses
provide a wonderful opportunity to check out areas of interest
for you before you commit to a college or a major or minor
program. Because PSEO is a Dual Enrollment program,
earning BOTH high school and college credit, consider taking
courses for purely enjoyment or exploration before you are
paying full college tuition.
-
Information to
assist you in your choices is offered for the PSEO at YEAH
courses:
-
Course
Application at college/university offering the
course/credit (NCU or NWC) is from their course catalogs
-
Transferability
as it relates to Minnesota Transfer Credit Categories for
General Education has been derived from a recent investigative
survey of multiple MNSCU websites.
-
This data is meant
to be a general guideline and does not imply or guarantee
transfer of NCU or NWC credits to any institution; acceptance
and transfer of credits varies per college and is also
dependent on a course equivalent being offered at that
school.

NCU Course Description: |
|
Updated 3/25/11
|
|
These two courses are designed to expose
students to the wide ranges of styles and artists working and
living from the prehistoric period through the Renaissance
period (Art Appreciation I - fall) and Renaissance period through the
Modern period (Art Appreciation II - spring). Through coursework,
museum visits and papers, the student will gain first hand knowledge of the styles and mediums that make up these vibrant
periods.
Museum visits will help students
gain first hand knowledge of some of the art produced by the
people and cultures that will be covered. Tests and papers
will help students express opinions on the artwork and artists
studied as well as confirm the acquisition of knowledge.
We will look at the social, political, and cultural context of
various artworks and how the art reflects the culture and the
religion of the time. This is largely a historical look at
art but media, techniques and design elements will also be
discussed.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the various design
elements that make a work of art.
- Provide a basic interpretation
of a work.
- Understand the various
movements and styles of different historical periods.
- Provide an evaluation of a
work of art from both a Christian viewpoint and an aesthetic
one.
NOTE from YEAH PSEO instructor:
- This
course will cover the same chronological timeline of art history
as in the tutor's high school course "Art History &
Appreciation" but will take the subject to a much deeper
level of study and discussion per collegiate standards.
- PSEO
students who have had the instructor's high school course should
consider enrolling in this course to deepen their knowledge and
build on the foundation already laid.
- Work outside of the
classroom will be expanded, heightened and increased to maintain
college level standards.
- MIA tours (2 per semester) will
be mandatory and included in the course syllabus.
- Two
written exams, chapter reflection essays, oral presentation and
a major project will be due each semester.
Course Expectations:
- Class time will be spent in
review and discussion of text material, analysis and
observation of the period's art and artists, presentation of
student oral reports.
- Two
written exams, chapter reflection essays, chapter study quizzes,
one oral report on a given artist or subject per student,
and Visual timeline will be due each semester.
- MIA tours (2 per semester) will
be mandatory and are included in the course syllabus and course
credit hours necessary for completion of this course.

This course is designed to
familiarize students with the rich variety of literature
produced in the United States from just after the U.S. Civil
War through the present. Students will be exposed to a range
of writers and traditions that constitute the diverse and
multicultural American experience. Through discussion /
critical thinking and writing about significant literary
works, students will gain a greater appreciation and
understanding of American literature: poetry, plays, fiction
and nonfiction. A particular emphasis will be placed on the
evolution of literature in the midst of the last 150 years:
the centralization and expansion of the late 19th century
and early 20th century, the diversity and experimentation of
the Modern period and the time between the World Wars and
