Created to help students (and their parents)
to develop life skills and other interesting subjects that might be out
of the realm of traditional academics.

Opportunities for NEW and
UNIQUE ways to complete school credits (i.e. Think of creative
ways to incorporate these workshops in your curriculum for
Language Arts, Culinary Arts, Home Economics, Etiquette,
Horticulture, or Medieval studies)

SHORT sessions: 5-week
workshops and 2-week workshops (not a full year commitment)
-
Open to groups outside of
YEAH such as support groups, co-ops or just groups of friends who
might not be able to commit to a full year course.

Open to all home educated
students (see target age range for each workshop)

Discounted prices for YEAH
and YEAH Academy members.

Little or no homework
required for most workshops, unless desired.

Why? This program has
been created per member request for courses that do not fit
into the more academic format of current Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday schedules but are of interest..

Who? Who may attend?
Who are the tutors?

Workshops will be available to any homeschool student, per
eligibility requirements of each class: Priority goes to (1) YEAH
Academy members, (2) YEAH members, and (3) Program Participants.
Some courses will be available to parent/teen combinations.

>Who are the tutors? Workshops
will be taught by highly qualified and passionate instructors of
the same caliber as all of The Academy tutors.

Where? Workshops are held
at Bethany Church, 2025 Skillman, Roseville, MN 55113 (site of The
Academy classes).

When? Workshops will be
held on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Thursdays of September, October and
November, 2008. See workshop descriptions

"The national Babysitters'
Training certification course prepares youth ages 11 [and older]
to safely and responsibly car for themselves and/or other
children in the absence of parents or guardians. Youth will
learn important skills in four core areas: leadership and
professionalism, safety and safe play, basic care of infants and
children, and first aid." (from
the American Red Cross website) Included
in the course will be discussion of appropriate games, emergency
actions and tips on how to utilize this training in babysitting
and child care for opportunities that the student may have
available to them both as an income-producing job and/or one of
service within their church and community. An American Red Cross
Certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the

includes: Babysitting Training Handbook, Babysitter's
Training Emergency Reference Guide, and Babysitter's Training

In this workshop, we will cover all of the many LITTLE maintenance items
for your car.
- What do you need to know to be a smart
car owner and operator?
- What items on your car need to be
checked and when?
- What are the telltale signs of needed
work?
- How do you know if a car service
company is being straight with you when they tell you that
you need "4 new tires, repair your transmission,
replace the air filter, replace the sparkplugs"
etc.?
- How do your really know?
Students will develop a personal Owner's Manual with a check list of:
- What to do
- When to do it
- and in many cases, How you can
do it yourself.
We will use overhead pictures to
show you what to look for with handout pictures as well as the
checklist making up a handy personal Car
Owner's manual to save you both money and time.

TUTOR BIO:
Dr. Skip
Baumhoefner's
passion and interest in creating this class comes from years
of hands-on, common sense learning and the desire to help
other individuals become self sufficient individuals with
money in their own pockets. He brings into this course
his practical, hands-on experience growing up as a farm boy
whose father helped him to learn how to be self sufficient and
think for himself when any problem needed solving. He
has worked in various aspects of construction trades for 25
years; trade skills include being licensed as an electrician
as well as in heat-vac and plumbing. His approach to caring
for the maintenance of one's home and one's car is that of a
hands-on, common sense approach.
Professionally, Dr.
Baumhoefner has earned a Ph.D in Business Management from
Kennedy Western University; holds an MBA from the Univ. of St.
Thomas with an emphasis on Entrepreneurial Business
Leadership; a B.A. from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN.
He has been a tutor at The Academy
since 1999 (Computer Skills and Speech & Leadership) and
his passion lies in helping his students achieve as much as
they can. His greatest love is to watch students grow and
develop into the leaders and organizers of tomorrow. He has
been a home educating father of 2 daughters since 1986.

Students in the Basic Cooking
workshop will learn general things essential for being a good cook such
as kitchen safety and cleanliness, proper handling of knives,
measurement, shopping and preparation, tasting and trying new
things, planning a meal, halving or doubling a recipe, following
a recipe vs. improvising, where to look for good recipes,
etc. Basic techniques such as chopping vegetables,
separating an egg, whipping cream creaming butter, sautéing,
hard boiling eggs, and making homemade salad dressings, mayonnaise,
butter and pan sauce. Class sessions will be separated
into learning to cook items for specific meals such as
breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner and baking.
Each workshop time will be spent
getting ready to cook and/or bake; in the actual process of
preparing several items each week; tasting a variety of options
within a food category; and the ultimate enjoyment of sitting
down together at the end of their class session to enjoy eating
the food that they have prepared.
Students to provide: an
easy-to-wash, full length apron and a 3-ring binder notebook
(1" minimum) in which to put workshop handouts and recipe
sheets (optional: clear sheet protectors and section
dividers). Depending on the make-up and enthusiasm of the
students in the class, some cooking or baking may be required at
home and samples brought to the next class to share with each
other.
Tutor to provide: all food
items needed for recipes to be prepared in class, informational
hand outs and printed recipes.

Workshop Description: |

|
|
The first class of this workshop
will
consist of floral processing (i.e. the care of flowers to
prolong life, cleaning flowers and storing arrangements), tools
used in floral processing and arranging, types of
arrangements and the containers best suited for them, various
ways of setting up a vase arrangement and a brief tutorial on
color palette and the aesthetics of shape and line. The
first class will culminate in each student creating their own
vased floral arrangement, based on one style discussed in class.
The second class will consist of
a brief tutorial on wiring and taping flowers, a detail tutorial
on bow making, definitions and conventions of corsages and boutonnières
with students making their own corsage or boutonnière. An
overview will be given about about the tools and special
considerations of foam arrangements along with a handout of
flowers suited for foam arrangements. The class will
culminate in each student creating their own foam arrangement,
based on one of the styles discussed in the first class.
Students to Supply: a
small sharp knife (paring knives work well), a pair of sharp
scissors (able to cut woody stems and ribbon), wire cutters or
pliers with a wire cutter, a roll of green floral tape (brown or
light green can be substituted as well), a roll of non-wired
ribbon for practice in making bows (no less than 2 yards).
Supplies can be purchased at Joann Fabrics, Michael's Craft
Stores or other craft stores.
Tutor to Supply: All
flowers, floral wire, vase, floral foam block, design bowl for
arrangement, ribbon for corsage, floral water tape as needed for
floral projects completed in class.

TUTOR BIO:
M. Maria
López holds a B.A. in Theater, technical/design emphasis and
English minor from Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter MN and
is currently a MFA Scenic/Props Design candidate at the University
of Minnesota. Her theatrical floral design experience at
the Gustavus Theatre Scene Shop involved purchasing and
designing all floral-related props, including staging a 120
person wedding. Her floral design work experience since 1997
includes employment at The Flower Guys, Lexington Floral, Main
Floral Blaine and Hummingbird Floral. She specialized in
wedding consultations, floral design, plant care and
training/teaching other employees in floral design and
computer technology. Ms. López was home educated through her
high school graduation in 2000 and was an active member of the
YEAH Student Board of Directors.

This course will cover the correct
conventions for playwriting, including dialogue, description and
stage directions; various playwriting structures, the
"well-made play," modern plays, choreo-poems and
episodic structure. There will be a brief overview of how
modern plays are created--from commissioning through readings
and stage work. Students can expect to both read and write
scenes in class, with some outside work.
Students should have:
access to a computer (with spell check) with printer, access to
the internet and Email. Students should bring pencil and
paper to each class.

M. Maria López is
a 2004 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN
with a B.A. in Theater, technical/Design emphasis, and an
English minor. She is currently a MFA Scenic/Props Design
candidate at the University of Minnesota. Ms. Lopez is
not only passionate about all aspects of theatre, including
playwriting, she has had multiple playwriting classes and has
written two full-length plays. She has been on the
business end and taken the role of production manager in
bringing multiple plays through all the stages of the writing
process: commission, research, rewrites, readings, staged
readings, workshops, table work, rehearsals, staging and
touring. Ms. López was home educated through her
high school graduation in 2000 and was an active member of the
YEAH Student Board of Directors.

This course is for the beginning sewer
who has had little or no experience. Students will learn
basics of threading and operating a sewing machine, working with
a pattern, sewing techniques and mending. They will
complete several projects including a pillow case, book cover,
tote bag, laundry bag and pajama pants.
Students to supply: Each
student is responsible to bring their own sewing machine, sewing
supplies, fabric and thread. The supply lists and patterns
are all included in the text (students responsible for
individual purchase of the text). Upon registration, students
will receive more detailed itemization from the tutors. (See

Mrs. Carol Hill
holds a B.S. in Home Economics Education from Iowa State
University. Sewing has been a great love for her from
early in life and she began making her own clothes by late
elementary school age. She was very involved in 4-H
programs and earned many awards including the Make it with
Wool sewing contest. Carol has had her own sewing business
specializing in formal gowns and custom window
treatments. She and her husband have home educated their
3 sons since 1998 and are active members of The YEAH
Academy. She enjoys all aspects of teaching, including
giving piano lessons since 1988. Carol gets great
satisfaction in transferring her skills, knowledge and
passions to others of all ages.

This 2-week lab class is being created with a focus
on sewing specialty items for the holiday season. We will
be making holiday placemats, napkins and options for other
projects, depending on the student's sewing abilities. These
projects can be used for preparation for the holidays and also
for gift ideas. The course is designed for the beginner
sewer who knows how to thread thei rmache and sew basic straight
stitch seams.

student is responsible to bring their own sewing machine, sewing

early in life and she began making her own clothes by late
elementary school age. She was very involved in 4-H
programs and earned many awards including the Make it with
Wool sewing contest. Carol has had her own sewing business
specializing in formal gowns and custom window
treatments. She and her husband have home educated their
3 sons since 1998 and are active members of The YEAH
Academy. She enjoys all aspects of teaching, including
giving piano lessons since 1988. Carol gets great
satisfaction in transferring her skills, knowledge and
passions to others of all ages.

Take time to enjoy the creative process of carving. Choose from many formats and subjects including chip carving, bird figures, scrim shaw on bone, walking stick, boats, animals, or human figures, etc.
Injury waiver: must be signed by a parent due to the use of some
special tools, and will be available from tutor upon
registration.
Students must supply: a good pair of well fitting leather
gloves (required for safety), and a box for carrying supplies and project.
Tutor to supply: a professional
detail carving knife, all the wood and figures for the clas.

TUTOR BIO:
Karla Hall is
an accomplished and award winning artist in many mediums
including drawing, painting, etching, sculpting and taxidermy.
She studied Commercial Art while attending Northwestern
College, Roseville and for 4 years has studied under Mary Rose
Pettis. For the past 15 years she has had the privilege of
teaching hundreds of students in several settings: public and
private schools, numerous homeschool co-ops, and Cyber Village
Academy. Together with her husband, they have home educated
their two sons since 1997 and enjoy life on their hobby farm
in Stillwater. She and her sons served on the YEAH Board of
Directors for many years. She has tutored numerous studio art
