New, more in-depth material! |

The goal of this course is to challenge students to think for themselves in a course that relates critical thinking to real life. Critical thinking enriches our lives as we learn to use our minds to derive meaning from what we read and view. Students will learn to evaluate the media’s messages and values through a Judeo-Christian worldview as we study a variety of mediums: literature, poetry, short stories, news, advertising, and film.
This course will teach students how to read for meaning and comprehension; how to identify symbolism, metaphor and allegory in the medium; and how to perform interpretive, but supported meanings. We will use a variety of materials to illustrate metaphor, symbolism, allegory, worldview, fact vs. opinion, absolute truth, direct vs. indirect claims, and persuasion vs. propaganda. The coursework focuses on reading, writing, research, and critical thinking activities, as well as application and creative presentation of ideas.
