Why is our economy is in the state it is? When, why and how we’ve gone off the gold standard? Why do prices keep rising? Whatever Happened to Penny Candy is a simple, entertaining introduction to economic theory, easy to read and understand, but not oversimplified. It explains economics along with interesting historical information. Topics covered: origin and history of money, story of our dollar, and economic behavior of the government, business cycle, inflation, recession, depression, federal debt, and foreign currency, how and why the government impacts the value of money, and the wisdom and pitfalls of investing. Economics in One Lesson is an overview of macro and microeconomics helping students understand how the world works so they can make better career, business and investment decisions. Topics include: inflation, money supply, taxes, supply & demand, fiat money, business cycles, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, Austrian free-market economics model, and Keynesian economic model, etc. Biblical principles will be investigated for endorsement of any economic theory or financial practice. Abstract concepts will come alive as we view case studies from history, movies and student’s personal experiences. Students will experience the theories discussed through age-appropriate projects. They will team up and start a business and experience decision making, supervising employees, and cooperating with partners.

Economics CLEP Prep

Spring Semester

Class Description:

   
Dr. Whitney's first semester Economics course gives a broad overview of macro and micro economics. His second semester Economics course will alternate between preparation for the CLEP Macroeconomics (spring 2008) and Microeconomics (spring 2009) exams. Students will cover all the material that will be on the exam. A prerequisite for taking CLEP economics is completing Dr. Whitney's general Economics course at The Academy at any time. Students will be responsible to sign up for the exam at a testing center. If they pass they will receive 4 college credits for the course which could be transferred to a college they attend in the future. A college textbook TBD will be assigned. Students will study the material and take sample exams to prepare the student to take the CLEP test and test-taking strategies. The student may then take the exam at the University of Minnesota at their convenience and get 4 college credits if they pass. Their cost will be approximately $85 per test.
