LATIN COURSES
NOTE: All Students will have the opportunity to take the National Classic League’s National Latin Exam in March. Students taking the Latin I exams have received awards ranging from Gold medal summa cum laude to cum laude. Those taking the Latin III Prose exam have received Gold & Silver medals. Over half of the students taking the introductory exam received certificates – and several students have attained a perfect score!

Introduction to Latin Studies

Full Year Course

Class Description:

   
An introductory Latin course to help students acquire basic Latin grammar concepts and vocabulary, develop good language study habits, see relationship between Latin and other languages, especially English and explore Roman culture. It is designed to provide a solid background and preparation for a successful entry of students into Latin I. While not a pre-requisite for Latin I, it is foundational and highly recommended when possible.

Required text: "The Phenomenon of Language
Phenomenon of Language can be ordered independently by student - or it can be ordered through YEAH Printing Services. To order, email YEAH@mtn.org with full name and you will be E-Invoiced for $25.00.  Pre-paid spiral bound books will be delivered to students on the first day of class. (If student purchases text on their own or has access to a used book, it must be the 2nd edition.)

Latin I

Full Year Course

Class Description:

   
A beginning Latin I course will help students acquire basic Latin grammar concepts and vocabulary, develop good language study habits, see the relationship between Latin and other languages, especially English, and explore Roman culture. Students will prepare for and take the National Latin Exam in the spring.

Latin 1 Required Texts:

  • Ecce Romani IA for fall semester
  • Ecce Romani IB for spring semester

Ecce Romani IA and IB text copies can be ordered independently by student on their own - or through YEAH Printing Services. To order, email YEAH@mtn.org with full name and you will be E-Invoiced for online payment:

  • $25.00 (black/white copy; spiral bound with vinyl covers).

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of tutor’s Latin I class (above) or written pre-approval by tutor through placement test.

This course is a continuation of Latin I. Students will prepare for and take the National Latin Exam in the spring.

Latin 2 Required Texts:

  • Ecce Romani 2B for spring semester

Advanced Latin 

Full Year Course

This course will be offered for 2011-12 concurrently with AP Latin: Vergil. Students must be registered for the AP section to be eligible for AP high school credit on their transcript.

Target Group: Advanced Latin Students who have met the prerequisites set forth by tutor.
Class Size Limit: NO NEW STUDENT Registrations will be accepted Mid-Year
Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of tutor’s Latin II class (above), PSEO ALAN 251, Latin 1B (below) or who can show that they have the equivalent in their knowledge of Latin and written pre-approval by tutor through placement test.

Class Description:

This advanced Latin course will consist of readings of ancient Latin authors in non-adapted text TBD. This reading course will prepare the student for readings of college prep texts.
