reading skills and be able to handle material written for
mature readers.
Class Type:
Full Year
Class Description:
This course will explore literature with
representative works from a variety of genres, cultures, and
periods. Taught from a Judeo-Christian world view,
students will evaluate the literature through critical thinking
and key questions.
Through critical analysis of imaginative
literature, students will discuss structure, style, and theme,
as well as elements like figurative language, imagery,
symbolism, and tone. This close reading leads to
interpretation and evaluation in which we weigh the quality and
artistic achievements in a piece. In addition, students
explore different contexts of a work, including biographical,
social and historical contexts, among others.
In this course, student are expected to
explain a text (which includes interpretation and
analysis of language and structure) and to evaluate
a text (which involves making and supporting judgments about its
artistry and underlying values through analysis, interpretation
and argument.) Students will examine textual details, establish
connections among observations, and draw observations leading to
an interpretive conclusions about the meaning and value of a
text.
To demonstrate critical reading, students
will practice free-writing and journal responses, along with
reflective and annotated papers, learning to cite sources
according to standard MLA (Modern Language Association)
requirements. While we will focus on critical analysis,
students will practice some expository, analytical,
argumentative, and critical responses in order to explore a
variety of styles.
