This course is designed to develop cultural literacy through an overview of famous authors throughout the world and a sampling of their masterpieces. Students will discuss the purpose and importance of the classics, followed by unit studies during the Fall semester in Ancient Greek and Roman literary classics, as well as Medieval Christian literature. Spring semester will include classics from post Renaissance, Western Social/Political philosophy, and moving towards the Modern era. In addition to assigned reading, activities will include response writing, in-class discussions, unit exams, small group projects, and individual presentations.

Join us on an exciting survey of American
Literature! Our primary text is The Norton Anthology of
American Literature which exposes students to a wide
variety of short stories, essays, poems, and novel
excerpts.
Fall semester opens with authors dating from
pre-1700's to about 1965.
Spring semester picks up from 1865 to our
present age.
While there may some familiar authors (like
Emerson, Melville, Hemingway and Twain), students will also be
introduced to the works of some less familiar faces (like Henry
James, Langston Hughes, and Li-Young Lee). Students are
expected to actively participate in class discussions and to
think critically as they reflect on the literature and work
collaboratively in small groups. Assignments include thought-provoking
homework questions, occasional essays, small group projects and
presentations.
