Class Description:
This course is a values-based study of relationships (past, present and future) and how the student will deal with them. Foundational is an in-depth Genogram where the student will examine her genealogical history in the context of such areas as dating, marriage, parenting, careers, financial management, etc. Family, especially parental, involvement is critical to successful completion of the course. It will explore aspects of one’s family genealogy as associated with how the student relates to life.
The course text is a values-based curriculum published by Life-Innovations, Inc. and is based on the reality that the quality of our lives is dependent upon the quality of our relationships and that the skills necessary to create good relationships can be learned. Healthy friendships, couple relationships and families require time and effort, as well as insight into others and ourselves, but are well worth the effort.
The overall focus of the course will be a biblically based, balanced approach to assist young people as they work with their families in making the best personal choices for their lives. The area of individual spiritual gifts will also be explored.
The Building Relationships: Skills for Life curriculum promotes the goals of: learning and practicing communications skills; constructive conflict management; learning important aspects of healthy and happy relationships; expressing oneself through verbal and nonverbal communications; assertiveness and active listening; learning how to effectively manage money and avoid credit problems; exploring family-of-origins influences and issues; building awareness of dating and interpersonal relationships and creating realistic expectations of marriage and family life.
Weekly student assignments include reading of and answering questions pertaining to the text, biblical passages read and principles applied, topic-related interviews with parents and peers, and self-reflection and processing. Weekly parent assignments include completing topic-related worksheets and discussions with their daughter.
Supplemental reading will be assigned to study and discuss various current trends and viewpoints among Christian circles regarding dating and courtship.
