Debate: Introduction to Team Policy Debate

One Semester Course

This course will not be offered for 2011-12

Class Size Limit: Minimum of 12 students is needed

Class Type: Full Year  

Class Description:

   
This one semester course will cover the basics of team policy debate (flowing a debate round, basic research techniques, preparation of negative briefs, preparation of strong affirmative cases) as well as persuasive public speaking. 
  • There will be one off-site visit as a class to Roseville Ramsey County Library for research training.
  • Parent involvement is mandatory--please review syllabus for dates of practice debates.
  • Participation in the class includes the option to compete in National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA) debate tournaments as a club in the winter-spring 2011 - details below.

Course Objectives: To understand and establish skills in:

  1. Basics of team policy debate
  2. Basic research techniques and preparation of a negative brief.
  3. Basics of cross-examination.
  4. Basics of Flow-Charting a debate round.
  5. Basic techniques of persuasive speaking.

NCFCA Debate Competition option:

  • Participation in Debate competitions through  (NCFCA) in Winter-Spring 2011 is optional, but encouraged. $30.00 membership fee is payable by September 15, 2010.  This option and details will be provided by Dr. Ezzo to students enrolled in the class prior to the start of class.
  • A student who participates in the NCFCA competition must be at least 51% home educated through the entire 2010-11 academic school year.  Full time PSEO students are not qualified to compete.
  • Spring semester NCFCA debate teams will meet at the same time as the fall class. 
  • NCFCA team policy debate topic for 23010-11 is: "Resolve: That the United States Federal Government should significantly reform its policy toward Russia."
