Bio:

Valerie Swedlund holds a B.S. in elementary education from St. Cloud State University.  She taught history, reading, science, physical education, English and math in the Stillwater and Chaska public schools for ten years. Mrs. Swedlund left the public school system to educate her children at home and came to discover all four were non-traditional, creative learners.  Mrs. Swedlund has tutored creative learners in grades two through college, taught hands-on world history and Konos unit studies to other homeschool families, and facilitated homeschool students in writing, illustrating, and publishing their own books.  She taught, coached, and mentored middle school and high school homeschool students in the statewide Destination Imagination program where she was also a regional and state judge.  She served eight years as the principal for the CEFC Homeschool Co-op classes.  In addition to working at The Academy, Mrs. Swedlund also works as an educational teaching consultant and a learning styles consultant assisting parents, students and teachers.  She conducts workshops on learning styles for organizations such as MOPS, PTO, public and private schools, and Sunday School departments. A speaker for YEAH, MACHE, MHA, HBEAA, and homeschool support groups throughout the state, she has been a member of YEAH since 1992, is a former YEAH board member and has worked extensively with The Academy in various roles.  Mrs. Swedlund brings first hand experience of the right-brain learner to her classroom, striving for openness, empathy and humor in her teaching.  She believes that God has gifted each creative learner with special talents that once utilized, can unlock ways to better understand all subject areas. Mrs. Swedlund has tutored at The Academy since 2007.
